Columbine ( Aquilegia) is a perennial that becomes dormant in our winter. It grows 12-36 inches tall depending on species and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Rabbits usually leave it alone. Columbine blooms in late spring and reblooms sporadically during summer.

Columbine may be started from seed in fall or early spring. Protect it until the plants become well rooted. They transplant easily from homegrown or purchased four-inch plants or six-pacs. Columbine is best transplanted here in spring. Clumps need to be divided every three or four years. The rooted clumps can be easily transplanted to form new plants.
Wild columbine (Aquilegia formosa ) - has red blooms and grows north of the Descanso area. It is found in moist, shady locations at higher elevations.
