Hollyhocks
Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) is a very tall, upright biennial
grown for its spectacular blooms.
Many selections are available in all colors except blue.
These make excellent choices for a tall border or against
a wall or fence where they bloom all summer.
They will survive in rocky, dry wastelands or grassy areas.
Hollyhocks attract bees and are a host plant
for the Painted Lady Butterfly.
- CULTIVATION:
- Location: Plant in full sun.
- Soil: They do well in moderately fertile, well-drained areas.
- Water: Let the soil dry out between watering, and provide deep
water periodically.
- Seasonal care: Cut back old stalks after new growth begins in spring.
- PROPAGATION:
Hollyhocks may be started from seed in mid-spring or early summer.
Broadcast seed where the plant is to grow.
They transplant easily from purchased or homegrown four-inch or
six-pac plants.
With good conditions, Hollyhocks may reseed naturally.
- PROBLEMS:
A rust affects older plants. Remove and replace them periodically.
Protect leaves from squirrels.
- SOURCES: Local Nurseries.
