Iris for Descanso Gardens

Irises are available in many species, varieties, hybrids and types. Size ranges from dwarf to tall. There are many iris collectors, and several organizations that focus on the different types and sizes. Currently we have only received recommendations for Bearded and Dutch Iris.

DWARF BEARDED IRIS

Dwarf Iris (Iris reticulata) is a perennial growing from rhizome.

TALL BEARDED IRIS

Bearded Iris (Iris) is a perennial growing from rhizome. It is also called German Iris.
Irises do well in borders or in special cutting beds, and they make wonderful flower arrangements.
They come in almost every shade imaginable and many have a pleasant scent.
They bloom in spring, and some rebloom in fall if growing conditions are right.
There are several catalog sources for the named cultivars, which come in many colors.

• CULTIVATION:
  • Location: Plant in direct sun.
  • Soil:
  • Water: Let the soil dry out between watering, and provide deep water every two to three weeks. Reduce water in mid-summer.
• PROPAGATION: Divide every 3-4 years during August or September and plant new rhizomes during the same months. Place them twelve to eighteen inches apart, with the pointed end of the rhizome toward the sun and the top just below the soil surface. Be sure the roots are not compacted. Some references say not to cover the rhizome with soil but a little soil or mulch seems necessary under our hot, windy fall conditions. Irises in containers may be transplanted anytime.
• PROBLEMS: Borers may infest rhizome. Cut back foliage hard after first frost. Ground squirrels occasionally eat the blooms.
• SEASONAL CARE: In late fall, cut back leaves to four to six inches, leaving a fan shape. Remove brown or split leaves as you notice them and in spring just after new growth begins.
