Red Hot Pokers for Descanso Gardens
Red Hot Poker or Torchflower (Kniphofia) is a shrub with
deciduous grass-like or almost succulent leaves.
It grows up to six feet from rhizomes and forms clumps.
It likes moist places in grass or along waterways in its native
south african tropical areas.
Many hybrids are available in shades of red, pink, white,
lavender or purple.
CULTIVATION:
- Location: Plant in full sun or partial shade.
- Soil: Fertile, humus-rich, maoist but Well drained or
sandy.
- Water:
Let the soil dry out between waterings, and provide deep
water periodically regularly , but do not overwater.
PROPAGATION:
- These are best started by division in late spring or
from basal cuttings of new shoots in spring.
