Primroses for Descanso Gardens
Primroses (Primula). Perennial.
There are over 600 species.
These are grouped into sections or groups of species
with common characteristics.
Hobbyists grow many named species and travel to show their
carefully nurtured individual plants.
POLYANTHA PRIMROSES
FAIRY PRIMROSES

- CULTIVATION:
Plant in partial shade.
Try them in a woodland garden, under filtered shade
or near a pond or stream.
They love cool, moist locations.
Provide rich soil.
Provide regular water.
All primroses make excellent container plants.
- PROPAGATION:
Primroses may be started from seed in spring or fall.
Protect until the plants become well settled.
They transplant easily from purchased four-inch plants
or six-pacs.
Best transplanted in fall, but may also be planted in spring.
With good conditions, primroses may reseed naturally.
- ORGANIZATIONS:
The American Primrose Society
publishes a quarterly journal and sponsors shows and a seed exchange.
- SPECIAL FEATURES:
Attract butterflies.
- PROBLEMS:
Long, hot summers and dry climates take a toll on primroses.
Regular watering and part shade may help.
- TRY THESE SPECIES:
- Auricula Primrose (Primula auricula).
- English Primrose (Primula vulgaris).
- Fairy Primrose (Primula malacoides).
Also sometimes called Baby primrose.
- no common name (Primula obconica).
- Polyanthus primrose (Primula polyantha).
Also sometimes called English primrose.
