All Dahlia tubers should be planted by now.
• As the foliage dies down, lawn areas that are naturalized with bulbs can now be cut.
• Along border edges, Sweet Alyssum can be sown where spent Pansies have been removed.
• Be sure to keep Sweet Peas well watered to keep the blooms showing.
• Begin thinning surplus fruit set on your fruit trees.
• Continue your regular fruit tree spray schedule.
• Cultivate soil around roses regularly.
• Cut back unwieldy growth on wisteria vines.
• Finish up pruning of spring-blooming shrubs by the end of the month.
• Gardenias and Azaleas that have flowered indoors, can be sunk in a corner of the garden.
• Gather rose petals for making potpourri, or cut already open flowers for drying.
• Give Fuchsias plenty of water.
• It is safe now to set tropical Water-Lilies in garden pools and ponds.
• Keep an eye on your roses for diseases, insects and suckers.
• Last call to sow Alyssum, Bachelor Buttons and Zinnias for late bloom, is the end of this month.
• Make another planting of Gladiolus and feed your earlier plantings.
• Make some time to enjoy the beauty of your garden.
• Pinch bedding plants to encourage branching.
• Plan for succession crops as early ones are harvested in the vegetable garden.
• Plant another patch of lettuce, before the intense heat of summer arrives.
• Prune one-third of older canes from rambler roses as blooms fade.
• Prune suckers from tomato plants.
• Regularly fertilize plants growing in planters, tubs and window boxes.
• Removing spent blooms from roses will keep the beds tidy.
• Thin seedlings to ensure that plants have plenty of room to grow.
• This is a good month to prune Dogwoods; correct shaping now will encourage a fine display for spring.
• To make cutting easier, deciduous hedges should be sheared before new growth hardens.
• Top leaf buds should be removed from Chrysanthemums to encourage bushy growth.
• Why not plant some herbs by the kitchen door?
• You can remove any spent flower heads from Lilacs and Rhododendrons.
• Zinnias like deep cultivation and wood ashes worked in their soil.
