Seasonal Tasks for the Descanso Gardener

August Gardening Tasks

- Keep deadheading all faded flowers. Some will still rebloom before Fall is over.
- Cut back the fruiting canes from your blackberries and raspberries.
- Some plants should be divided or transplanted before they go dormant for winter:
- Lupines
- Bleeding Hearts
- Oriental poppies
- Daylilies
- Lilies (after the foliage dies back)
- Irises
- Stop fertilizer applications for Roses and other shrubs.
- It's a good time to shear evergreen hedges.
- Bug Patrol!
- Check for borers on bearded iris, fruit trees.
- Look for insects under leaves of rhododendron and azaleas.
- Reseed burn spots in your lawn.
- Think about turning a water demanding lawn area into a new drought-resistant flower bed.
- You can still sow late vegetable crops especially if you have a protected bed..

- radishes
- turnips
- lettuce
- Try making some evergreen shrub cuttings. Keep them shaded and cool until they are well rooted.
- Last chance to order spring blooming bulbs. Plant them anytime between now and Thanksgiving.
- Plant seeds for spring bloom: pansies, forget-me-nots, English daisies, delphiniums
- Buy some new chrysanthemum colors. Use them for table flowers, then plant them out before they fade back.
