Seasonal Tasks for the Descanso Gardener

April
"The first day of April is the day we wait for
the other 364 days of the year."
- Hang hummingbird feeders.
- Clean, weed and amend vegetable gardens.
- Mow and fertilize lawns.
- Plant perennials and evergreens.
- We have had early April snow flurries in recent years. Be prepared to protect new plantings.
- Plant summer vegetables after last frost.
- Continue to plant new summer-blooming bulbs. Crocosma, Glads, Lilies, Crinum, Alstromeria may still be planted.
- Plant seeds after danger of last frost.
- Fertilize berry vines and strawberries.
- Shape up shrubs as they finish flowering:
Azaleas, Lilacs, Forsythia, Camelias, Magnolias
- Weed...Weed...Weed.
- Sit and observe the beauty from your hard work. Start a garden journal.
